Darksiders = Free Red Faction?

crafted by: Alex

This has to be the best promotion I've ever seen.  The mystery code found in early versions of Darksiders are to be used over at the Darksiders Blog to get a free digital "Hellbook", your standard bonus disk, AND a FREE copy of Red Faction: Guerrilla.  Unfortunately my copy of Darksiders lacked this code, but I already own Red Faction Guerrilla, so I'm not too disappointed, though as a collector that likes bonus items, I wish I had the Hellbook.

I am shocked that THQ didn't use this as a way to promote the game.  Maybe there was some sort of delay or legal issue behind the whole thing that prevented them from using it for promotion during it's launch?  But to get a free game?  Kudos to you THQ, that is a bold move.  this is like a big middle finger to all the little trinkets that GameStop hands out, and like a big thank you to early adopters of their new IP.  I can only hope this sort of thing continues if the future.  Both of these games are very solid titles, if you have an opertunity, give them a chance.

Darksiders 2 Announced, Thoughts…

crafted by: Alex

Box art for the NES edition of Darksiders 2

IGN Has news stating that THQ has announced a sequel to Darksiders.  You can check out my Darksiders review to see I really enjoying it much more than I ever expected.  But it brings into question, just how good is a sequel to a highly derivative game going to be?

Zelda has been pretty stale since Majora's Mask.  That's not to say Twilight Princess isn't a great game, but it is not very memorable (yet I will never forget the horror on Link's face when he puts on one of those masks...)  I just don't see myself sitting down to another Darksiders game when all that made it unique has already been seen.

But, I have hope.  Vigil Games did a great job of incorperating a lot of different mechanics into a ver polished game.  And I would love to see some more variety from other genres thrown in there.  Personally I really liked the 2 large guns you get to use in Darksiders and would like to see possibly some more well integrated shooting mechanics.

Boss Battle: Darksiders vs. Alex

crafted by: Alex

Paul: "Link and Ganon have been working out, huh?" Alex: "No, this is Darksiders"

Darksiders attacks: critical damage!

  • Unique style.  Mix of fantasy in a post apocalyptic world.
  • Story has enough substance to keep you interested.
  • Great pacing.  A new item/skill/attack/enhancement is always 15-30 minutes away.
  • Lots of variety, from flying on a winged horse creature, to blasting angels with large angel cannons. (Don't worry, there is a demon cannon too, both are equally awesome!)
  • Better than expected voice acting.  Interesting characters.
  • Lengthy adventure: 10-16 hours

Alex attacks: a glancing blow.

  • Nothing new to see here
  • Poorly mapped controls
  • Late game item swapping can become a chore
  • Lacking the side quests found in Zelda games.

Battle Summary:

Darksiders is what your mom thinks of when she hears the words "video game."  A big dude, with a big sword, killing demons (and angels.)  Darksiders doesn't try to be anything that it's not, it wants to be a video game, and it succeeds wholeheartedly.  Darksiders is probably my favorite Zelda game since Majora's Mask.  You've probably heard the comparisons already, but it really can't be stressed enough, If Princess Zelda and Kratos had a baby, it would be War.   If you like Zelda and God of War, you WILL like Darksiders.

Battle Results:  Darksiders defeats Alex.
